# Close the till in Jovvie Point of Sale

Section: Jovvie Point of Sale > Cash management

> Count the cash in the drawer at the end of a shift and close the till session.

Close the till at the end of a shift. You count the cash in the drawer and enter the total. The register then compares your count to the amount it expects and shows you the difference, which is called the variance.

## Before you start

- A till is open for this station. See [Open the till](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/cash/open-the-till/).
- Finish any cash sales and cash refunds first, so the expected amount is complete.
- Record any paid in, paid out, or drop that has not been recorded yet. See [Record paid in, paid out, drops, and adjustments](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/cash/record-cash-events/).
- Count all the cash in the drawer, including the opening float.
- If your station asks for a PIN on this action, have the **Cash Management PIN** ready.

## Close the till

1. Select the three-dot button in the cart to open the cart menu.

2. Select **Cash Management**.

3. If the station accepts more than one currency, select the tab for the currency you are closing.

4. Select **Close Till**.

5. Check the **Expected Amount**. This is the opening float plus cash sales and paid in, minus cash refunds, paid out, and drops, plus any adjustments.

6. In **Counted Amount**, enter the total cash you counted.

Enter your count before you continue. If you leave this field empty, the register counts it as 0.00 and shows a large shortage.

7. Check the **Variance**. It appears as soon as you enter a count.

   - A plus sign means you counted more than expected.
   - A minus sign means you counted less than expected.
   - 0.00 means your count matches.

8. Optional: in **Closing Note**, explain any variance.

9. Select **Close Till**.

10. If the **Enter Cash Management PIN** screen appears, enter the PIN. If it does not appear, skip the next step.

11. Select **Verify**.

The register shows **Till closed successfully**, and then a **Till Closed** screen with the final **Variance**. Select **Done**. If the station accepts more than one currency, the button is **Continue** instead, and you can open or close the other currencies.

> **Caution**
>
> You cannot reopen or edit a till session after you close it. Check your count before you select **Close Till**. You can review closed sessions in [Cash till reports](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/cash/reports/).

If you opened the till by mistake or want to throw the session away without a count, [void the session](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/cash/void-a-session/) instead.

## After you close

- The dot next to **Cash Management** in the cart menu turns red. If the station accepts more than one currency, the dot stays green until the tills for all currencies at the station are closed.
- Cash sales are no longer added to a till until you open a new one.
- The session, its counted amount, and its variance appear in the **Cash Till** report in your analytics. See [Cash till reports](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/cash/reports/).

## If you see an error

### **“Cash session is not open.”**

**Symptom:** You select **Close Till** and see this message.

**Cause:** The till was already closed or voided, possibly from another device.

**Fix:** Select **Cash Management** to check the till’s status. If it shows the **Open Till** screen, the session is already closed or voided. Review it in [Cash till reports](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/cash/reports/).

### **“Failed to close till.”**

**Symptom:** You select **Close Till** and see this message.

**Cause:** The register could not close the till.

**Fix:**

1. Select **Cash Management** to check whether the till is still open.
2. If the till is still open, try to close it again.
3. If it keeps happening, contact [Jovvie support](https://jovvie.com/support/).
