# Take an NMI terminal payment in Jovvie Point of Sale

Section: Jovvie Point of Sale > Take payments

> Charge a customer's card on an NMI terminal from the Point of Sale register.

If your store takes card payments through NMI, use the NMI payment method in the Jovvie Point of Sale register to charge a card on an NMI terminal (the card machine the customer pays on). When the payment goes through, the order is marked completed.

> **Note: Using Stripe?**
>
> Stripe readers use a different payment method. See [Take a Stripe card reader payment in Jovvie Point of Sale](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/sell/card-payment-stripe/). For a summary of the differences, see [Stripe and NMI: what’s different](https://docs.jovvie.com/payments/stripe-vs-nmi/).

## How NMI terminals differ from Stripe readers

- **Abort** only stops the register from waiting. It does not cancel the transaction on the terminal. You must cancel it on the terminal as well.
- You pick the terminal at checkout. The list shows every terminal registered to your NMI account. Terminals are not turned on per station like Stripe readers.
- Express checkout does not start NMI terminals automatically.
- NMI terminals only work with currencies that have two decimal places.
- Once the transaction has started, the register can wait up to about three minutes for the terminal result. Starting the transaction can take extra time before that.

## Before you start

- NMI is connected. To get NMI connected, contact [Jovvie support](https://jovvie.com/support/). The NMI settings are then in **POS** > **Settings** > **NMI**. See [Stripe and NMI: what’s different](https://docs.jovvie.com/payments/stripe-vs-nmi/).
- The NMI payment method is turned on. By default it is named **Swipe/Insert/Tap**, the same as the Stripe method. See [Choose payment methods](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/set-up/payment-methods/).
- Your terminal is registered to your NMI account, turned on, and connected to the internet.
- The cart has at least one item. See [Find and add products](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/sell/add-products/).

## Take the payment

1. In the cart, tap **Checkout**.

2. If a tip screen or a **Points & Rewards** screen opens, complete it first. See [Accept a tip](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/sell/tips/) and [Redeem Points and Rewards](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/sell/points-and-rewards/).

3. Under **Select Payment Method**, tap **Swipe/Insert/Tap** marked **with NMI Terminal**.

4. Select the terminal the customer will use. If you only have one terminal, it is already selected.

5. Tap the pay button. By default it shows **Pay** and the amount.

The **Payment Processing** window opens. It shows status updates from the terminal while you wait.

6. Ask the customer to tap, insert, or swipe their card on the terminal.

7. Follow any prompts on the terminal screen.

When the payment goes through, the register shows the completed order. Tap **New Order** to start the next sale.

## Stop a payment

1. Tap **Abort** in the **Payment Processing** window. The register stops waiting and shows **Payment aborted.**
2. Cancel the transaction on the terminal.
3. Check the terminal screen to confirm the transaction was cancelled and the customer was not charged.

If the terminal transaction is still open and you tap the pay button again for the same order, the register picks up that same payment and keeps waiting. It does not start a second charge.

## If you are not sure the payment went through

> **Caution: Do not charge twice**
>
> Do not take the payment again, and do not switch to another payment method, until you have confirmed that no payment went through and the terminal transaction is not still open.

These messages mean the result is unknown:

- A message starting with **Timed out waiting for the terminal payment result.**
- A message starting with **Connection to the payment service was lost.**
- A message starting with **A previous attempt to start a terminal payment did not finish and its outcome is unknown.** A shorter version reads **A previous attempt to start this terminal payment has an unknown result.**
- **The payment may have completed, but the order could not be updated. Check the order history and the payment status before charging again.**

To check the payment:

1. Look at the terminal screen to see whether the payment went through.
2. If the terminal is still waiting for a card, cancel the transaction on the terminal.
3. Find the order in the register’s order history. See [Find and view orders](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/orders/find-orders/).
4. If the customer was charged, do not charge again.
5. Only if no payment went through and the terminal transaction is cancelled or failed, tap the pay button again.

If you are not sure, contact [Jovvie support](https://jovvie.com/support/) before you take another payment. For the fix for each message, see the NMI section of [Card reader payment problems](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/troubleshooting/card-readers/#nmi-terminals).

## Refunds

Refunds for NMI payments work differently from Stripe. See [Refund an order in the register](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/orders/refund/).
