# Record other payment types in Jovvie Point of Sale

Section: Jovvie Point of Sale > Take payments

> Record a payment the customer made outside the register, such as a check, bank transfer, or a separate card machine.

Some payment methods in the register do not take any money. They only record how the customer paid on the order. Use them when the payment happens outside Point of Sale, for example a paper check or a card machine that is not connected to Jovvie.

These methods work the same whether your store uses Stripe or NMI for cards.

## Which methods only record a payment

| Payment method | Use it for | Field you can fill in |
| -------------------- | --------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| **Check Payments** | A paper check | **Check ID or Note** |
| **Bank Transfer** | A bank transfer | **Bank Transfer Transaction ID or Note** |
| **Cash on Delivery** | An order the customer pays for when it is delivered | **Cash on Delivery Transaction ID or Note** |
| **Chip and Pin** | A card machine that is not connected to Jovvie | **Chip and Pin Transaction ID or Note** |
| **Other Payments** | Any other way of paying | **Payment ID, Confirmation ID or Note** |

Your store may have renamed these methods. **Check Payments** and **Other Payments** are turned on by default. **Bank Transfer**, **Cash on Delivery**, and **Chip and Pin** are off until an administrator turns them on. See [Choose payment methods](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/set-up/payment-methods/).

> **Caution**
>
> The register does not check that the customer paid. When you tap the pay button, the order is recorded as paid with this method. Make sure you have received the payment first. For a separate card machine, wait until it shows that the payment was approved.

## Record the payment

1. In the cart, tap **Checkout**.

2. If a tip screen or a **Points & Rewards** screen opens, complete it first. A tip or a points discount changes the total. See [Accept a tip](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/sell/tips/) and [Redeem Points and Rewards](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/sell/points-and-rewards/).

3. Under **Select Payment Method**, tap the payment method.

The **Order ID** field shows the order number.

4. Collect the final total shown on the pay button from the customer outside the register, or confirm that you have received it. For a separate card machine, wait until it shows that the payment was approved.

5. Optional: in the note field, enter a reference, such as the check number or the transaction ID from the card machine. The note is saved on the order.

6. Tap the pay button. By default it shows **Pay** and the amount.

The register shows the order with its new status. Tap **New Order** to start the next sale.

To record part of an order with one of these methods and the rest another way, use a split payment. See [Split a payment](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/sell/split-payment/).

## Order status after recording a payment

By default, orders recorded with these methods are marked **Processing**. Your store can choose a different status for each method. See [Choose payment methods](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/set-up/payment-methods/#choose-the-order-status-after-payment).

If the order shows **Processing**, tap **Complete** when you have handed over the items. See [Change an order’s status](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/orders/change-status/).

## Refunds

A refund in the register for these methods only records the refund. Return the money to the customer yourself, the same way they paid. See [Refund an order in the register](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/orders/refund/).
