# Add product barcodes for Jovvie Point of Sale

Section: Jovvie Point of Sale > Set up

> Add up to three barcodes to a simple product or one barcode to each variation for scanning or searching in Jovvie Point of Sale.

Add barcodes so staff can find products in Jovvie Point of Sale by scanning or typing a code. Simple products can have up to three barcodes; each variation can have one.

To set up scanning in the register, see [Set up barcode scanning](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/set-up/barcode-scanning/). Use scanning hardware with verified support for your operating system.

## Before you start

You need permission to edit products.

## Add barcodes to a simple product

1. In your dashboard, go to **Products** and open the product.
2. In **Product data**, open the **Inventory** tab.
3. In **Barcode**, enter the main barcode number or code.
4. If the product has more than one code, enter the others in **Barcode secondary** and **Barcode alternative**.
5. Click **Update**.

## Add barcodes to a variation

Each variation can have its own barcode. Variations do not use the barcodes of the main product, so enter a **Barcode** on every variation you want staff to scan.

1. Open the variable product.
2. In **Product data**, open the **Variations** tab.
3. Expand the variation.
4. In **Barcode**, enter the code for that variation.
5. Click **Save changes**.
6. Click **Update**.

> **Caution**
>
> On variations, only the **Barcode** field is saved. Leave **Barcode secondary** and **Barcode alternative** empty on variations. Codes you enter on the main product find the main product, not a specific variation.

## How the register uses barcodes

When staff scan or enter a code, the register looks for a product with a matching code. It checks the **Barcode**, **Barcode secondary**, **Barcode alternative**, and the product identifier (GTIN, UPC, EAN, or ISBN), and the code must match exactly. Typing part of a code in the product search also finds matching products.

## Tips

- Enter codes exactly as printed, with no extra spaces.
- Use a different code for each product so a scan finds only one.
