# Set up taxes for a Jovvie Point of Sale station

Section: Jovvie Point of Sale > Set up

> Turn taxes on or off for a station, choose how prices are shown, and decide which address taxes are based on.

Choose how each Jovvie Point of Sale station handles tax in either Standalone or WooCommerce. Each station has its own tax settings on its **Tax** tab. The tax rates themselves come from your store’s tax settings, and this tab controls how the station uses them.

## Before you start

- You need to be an administrator or shop manager.
- Set up your tax rates in your store’s tax settings first:

**If you use Standalone:**

1. Go to **Manage** > **Settings**.
2. Open the **Tax** tab.

**If you use WooCommerce:**

1. In your WordPress admin, go to **WooCommerce** > **Settings**.
2. Open the **Tax** tab.

## Open the Tax tab

1. In your dashboard, go to **POS** > **Stations**.
2. Click **Edit Station** on the station.
3. Open the **Tax** tab.

> **Note**
>
> The **Online Storefront Station** takes its tax setting and its tax calculation address from your store’s tax settings, and its **Tax** tab links to them. Its Tax/VAT and price display choices work as described in [Choose how prices are shown](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/set-up/taxes/#choose-how-prices-are-shown) and [Tax/VAT ID options](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/set-up/taxes/#taxvat-id-options).

## Turn taxes on or off

1. Under **Tax Options**, open the **Tax Options** list.
2. Choose **Enabled (using Shop Base configurations)** to charge tax using your store’s rates, or **Disabled** to charge no tax at this station.
3. Click **Save**.

Taxes are enabled by default.

## Choose how prices are shown

1. In **Display prices in the POS**, choose **Including tax** or **Excluding tax**. This controls prices on the product tiles.
2. In **Display prices during POS cart**, choose **Including tax** or **Excluding tax**. This controls prices in the cart.
3. Click **Save**.

Both are set to **Including tax** by default.

## Choose which address taxes are based on

**Calculate Tax Based on** is a list you can reorder by dragging an item to a new place. The order sets the priority, and the register uses the first address in the list that is available. The choices are:

- **POS Station Base Address**: the address on this station’s **General** tab, under **POS Base Address**.
- **Default Shop Base**: your store address.
- **Customer Shipping Address**
- **Customer Billing Address**

A customer address is only available when a customer with that address is added to the sale. Without one, the register moves down the list to the next available address. In the default order, that is the station address when it is filled in, then your store address.

1. Drag the address you want to the top of the list.
2. Click **Save**.

By default the list starts with **Customer Shipping Address**, then **Customer Billing Address**, **POS Station Base Address**, and **Default Shop Base**.

## Tax/VAT ID options

Use these if you sell to customers who give you a Tax/VAT number.

1. Select **Enable Tax/VAT ID Type Settings**.

2. In **Tax/VAT ID Behavior**, choose what happens to tax when a Tax/VAT ID is used:

   - **Tax/VAT not allowed to be removed**
   - **Allow Tax/VAT removed manually**
   - **Remove automatically Tax/VAT**
   - **Remove automatically if Customer has Tax/VAT ID**
   - **Remove automatically if Order has Tax/VAT ID**
   - **Remove automatically if Customer and Order has Tax/VAT ID**

3. Click **Save**.

**Tax/VAT not allowed to be removed** is the default. For how staff add a number during a sale, see [Add a Tax/VAT number](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/sell/add-tax-vat-number/).

> **Caution**
>
> Check with your accountant before you remove tax automatically. Tax rules depend on where you and your customers are.
