# Set up weight-based pricing in Jovvie Point of Sale

Section: Jovvie Point of Sale > Set up

> Sell products priced by weight or volume, and choose whether staff confirm the weight before the item is added to the cart.

Set up products priced by weight or volume in Jovvie Point of Sale, such as produce or bulk goods. With weight-based pricing, a product’s price applies to a set amount, such as 1 kg. At the register, staff enter the weight and the register works out the price.

Weight-based pricing works only in Point of Sale. It does not change how the product is sold in your online shop.

## Before you start

- You need to be an administrator or shop manager.
- The product needs a regular price.
- Weight-based pricing works on simple products and on individual variations of a variable product.

## Make a product weight-based

1. In your dashboard, go to **Products** and open the product.
2. In **Product data**, open the **General** tab.
3. Select the **Weight** option. Its description says “Enable weight based pricing. (Works only with POS)”.
4. Under the price fields, find **Per weight**. Enter the amount that the product price is for. For example, enter 1 to say the price is for 1 kg.
5. Next to **Per weight**, choose the unit: kg, g, lbs, oz, l, ml, gal, or pt.
6. Optional: under **Weight limit (optional)**, enter a minimum in **from** and a maximum in **to**.
7. Click **Update**.

The product is only treated as weight-based when **Per weight** is greater than 0.

### How the price is calculated

The register divides the weight staff enter by **Per weight**, then multiplies the product price by that number. If the price is 10 and **Per weight** is 1 kg, then 2 kg costs 20.

> **Caution**
>
> Fractional weights, such as 1.5 kg, may give a different total when an order is updated after it is added. To avoid this, have staff enter whole numbers in a smaller unit. For example, set the product up per 1 g and enter 1500 instead of 1.5 kg. Check the order total before you take payment.

If you set a weight limit, the register keeps the weight within it:

- A weight below **from** is raised to **from**.
- A weight above **to** is lowered to **to**.

### Variable products

1. Open the variable product and go to the **Variations** tab.
2. Expand the variation.
3. Select **Weight** on that variation.
4. Fill in the fields that appear: **Per weight**, the unit, and the minimum and maximum weight.
5. Click **Save changes**.

## Choose how staff add weight-based products

Each station decides whether staff must confirm the weight before the item goes into the cart.

1. Go to **POS** > **Stations**.
2. Find the station and click **Edit Station**.
3. Open the **Cart** tab.
4. Find **Weight based products**.
5. Select or clear **Weight products need to confirm weight to add to card**.
6. Click **Save**.

This setting is on by default.

- **On:** When staff tap a weight-based product, a panel opens with **Weight** (in your unit) and **Quantity**. Staff enter the weight and click **Add**. Whole-number limits are shown in the panel. Limits with decimals may not be shown.
- **Off:** The product is added to the cart right away using the **Per weight** amount. Staff can change the weight in the cart afterward.

## What shows on the order

The order shows the weight sold and the price for each unit amount. For example, it shows the weight in kg, followed by the price per 1 kg.
