> Plain-language definitions of the terms you will see in Jovvie and in these docs.

This page explains, in plain language, the terms you will see in Jovvie and in these docs. Terms are listed in alphabetical order.

## Access PIN

A PIN that lets someone use your card readers on the Jovvie payment page. The payment page asks for it when nobody is signed in to WordPress on the device and the browser is not connected. If you do not know your Access PIN, ask the person who manages your Jovvie account. To stop the PIN prompt on a shared device, connect the browser. See [Use Jovvie Checkout on a shared or kiosk device](https://docs.jovvie.com/checkout/connect-a-browser/).

## App terminal

A card reader, or Tap to Pay on a phone, that you use through the Jovvie app on an iOS or Android phone or tablet. In Point of Sale settings this appears as **iOS/Android app terminal**. Compare with [web terminal](https://docs.jovvie.com/start-here/glossary/#web-terminal). See [Web terminals and app terminals](https://docs.jovvie.com/hardware/web-and-app-terminals/).

## Jovvie payment page

The page where staff choose a card reader and the customer pays. After your checkout, form, or ticket order is created, Jovvie Checkout sends the browser to this page. See [Take a payment on the Jovvie payment page](https://docs.jovvie.com/checkout/jovvie-payment-page/).

## Location

A place where you take in-person Stripe payments, such as your shop or venue. Each Stripe reader is registered to a location. For Point of Sale, see [Set up card readers for a station](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/set-up/card-readers/). For Jovvie Checkout, see [Set up a Jovvie Checkout location and card readers in WordPress](https://docs.jovvie.com/checkout/locations-and-readers/).

## Location ID

The ID of a [location](https://docs.jovvie.com/start-here/glossary/#location). Stripe uses it to tell your locations apart. When Jovvie creates a location for you, it creates one for live mode and one for test mode, and each has its own ID. See [Set up a Jovvie Checkout location and card readers in WordPress](https://docs.jovvie.com/checkout/locations-and-readers/).

## Operator

A staff member who signs in to a Point of Sale [station](https://docs.jovvie.com/start-here/glossary/#station) to sell. Several operators can take turns on a shared device by switching users. See [Set up passcodes and user switching](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/set-up/user-switching/).

## Payment processor

The company that processes your card payments. The money from each payment goes to your account with that processor. Jovvie works with two processors, Stripe and NMI. See [Stripe and NMI: what’s different](https://docs.jovvie.com/payments/stripe-vs-nmi/).

## Reader

A card reader is the device a customer taps, inserts, or swipes their card on to pay. See [Set up card readers for a station](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/set-up/card-readers/).

## Registration code

A code that a Stripe [web terminal](https://docs.jovvie.com/start-here/glossary/#web-terminal) shows on its screen. You enter it when you register the reader. See [Set up card readers for a station](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/set-up/card-readers/).

## Split payment

One sale paid with more than one payment method, for example part in cash and part by card. See [Split a payment](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/sell/split-payment/).

## Standalone

A way to run Jovvie Point of Sale where Jovvie hosts your store for you. Your store dashboard and your register are at your own Jovvie address, such as `yourstore.jovvie.app`. A Standalone store can also include an online shop where customers order, which is off by default. The other way is to connect Point of Sale to your own WooCommerce store. See the [Jovvie Point of Sale overview](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/).

## Station

One register in Point of Sale. Each station has its own settings, such as taxes, payment methods, and card readers. See [Create and manage stations](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/set-up/stations/).

## Tap to Pay

A way to take a contactless card payment on a compatible iPhone or Android phone, without a separate card reader. See [Web terminals and app terminals](https://docs.jovvie.com/hardware/web-and-app-terminals/).

## Test mode

A mode that lets you practice taking payments without charging a real card. See [Use test mode](https://docs.jovvie.com/payments/test-mode/).

## Till

The cash you keep at a register. In Point of Sale, you open the till to start a cash session and close it when you finish. See [Open the till](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/cash/open-the-till/).

## Web terminal

A card reader that connects to the internet on its own. Staff use it from a web browser. You register it with a [registration code](https://docs.jovvie.com/start-here/glossary/#registration-code) shown on the reader. In Point of Sale settings this appears as **Web terminal**. Compare with [app terminal](https://docs.jovvie.com/start-here/glossary/#app-terminal). See [Web terminals and app terminals](https://docs.jovvie.com/hardware/web-and-app-terminals/).

## Webhook

An automatic message that one system sends to another when something happens, such as a payment going through. In the ready-made Jovvie Checkout integrations, the WooCommerce and Event Tickets plugins mark an order as paid when your site receives a payment confirmation from Stripe. The Gravity Forms and GiveWP plugins receive payment updates from Jovvie.
