# Card declined and payment error messages

Section: Troubleshooting

> Find out why a card payment did not go through and what to do next, for Stripe readers and NMI terminals.

If a card payment did not go through, this page helps you find out why and what to do next. Stripe and NMI report failed payments differently, so each has its own section.

This page covers payments that were declined or failed. For problems connecting to a reader, see [Reader not showing on the payment page](https://docs.jovvie.com/troubleshooting/reader-connection/) or [Card reader payment problems](https://docs.jovvie.com/point-of-sale/troubleshooting/card-readers/).

> **Caution: Before you charge again**
>
> If you are not sure whether a payment went through, do not take another payment yet. Check that no payment completed and none is still processing. If you are still not sure, contact support first.

## Stripe

With Stripe, the text of a decline message comes from Stripe and the card issuer, so the exact wording can vary.

### The card was declined

**Symptom:** After the customer taps, inserts, or swipes their card, a message says the card was declined. You may see it on the Jovvie payment page or in the **Payment Processing** window in Point of Sale.

**Cause:** The payment was refused, usually by the bank that issued the card.

**Fix:**

1. Tell the customer the card was declined.
2. Ask for a different card or another payment method.
3. If the customer wants to know why, ask them to contact their bank.

Do not keep trying the same card.

### The card details are not accepted on the Card option

**Symptom:** You select **Card** on the Jovvie payment page, enter the card details, and click **Pay**. A message says the card number, expiry date, or security code is wrong, or that the card was declined.

**Cause:** The details entered do not match the card, the card has expired, or the bank declined the payment.

**Fix:**

1. Check each detail against the card with the customer.
2. Correct any mistakes.
3. Click **Pay** again.
4. If the message continues, ask for a different card or another payment method.

### **“Payment failed. Please try again with a different payment method.”**

**Symptom:** This message appears in Point of Sale after a card payment.

**Cause:** The order was marked as failed. This does not prove the card was not charged, so check the payment result before you charge again.

**Fix:**

1. Check your Stripe Dashboard for a payment on this order. Look for payments that completed and payments that are still processing.
2. Check the order history for this order.
3. If no payment completed and none is still processing, take the payment again with a different payment method.

If you see a completed or processing payment, do not charge again. Contact support.

## NMI

NMI terminals work with Jovvie Point of Sale.

### **“Terminal payment failed.”**

**Symptom:** The terminal shows the payment as declined or failed, and Point of Sale shows this message.

**Cause:** The card was declined or the terminal could not complete the transaction.

**Fix:**

1. Check the terminal screen to confirm the payment did not go through.
2. Check the order history for this order.
3. Tell the customer the payment did not go through.
4. Ask for a different card or another payment method.

### **“Terminal payment cancelled.”**

**Symptom:** Point of Sale shows this message after a payment was started on the terminal.

**Cause:** The transaction was cancelled on the terminal, for example by the customer or a staff member.

**Fix:**

1. Check the terminal to confirm no payment went through.
2. Click the pay button again to start a new payment, or choose another payment method.

### **“This order has already been paid.”**

**Symptom:** You click the pay button for an NMI payment and see this message.

**Cause:** The order is already marked as paid.

**Fix:** Do not charge again. Open the order in the order history to check its payments. If you think the order was marked paid by mistake, contact support.

### **“A terminal payment for this order is still being started. Check the terminal, wait a moment, and try again.”**

**Symptom:** You click the pay button and see this message.

**Cause:** A payment for this order was sent to the terminal moments ago and is still starting.

**Fix:**

1. Look at the terminal. If it is asking for a card, let the customer complete the payment there.
2. If the terminal is idle, check the terminal screen and the order history for this order.
3. Confirm the customer was not charged and no payment is still processing. Waiting does not prove the payment failed.
4. Only then, click the pay button again.
5. If you cannot confirm the customer was not charged, do not try again. Contact support.
