Take a Stripe card reader payment in Jovvie Point of Sale
Use the Swipe/Insert/Tap payment method in the Jovvie Point of Sale register to charge a card on a Stripe card reader. The customer taps, inserts, or swipes their card on the reader, and when the payment goes through, the order is marked completed.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- Your Stripe account is connected to Point of Sale. See Connect Stripe to Jovvie Point of Sale.
- The Swipe/Insert/Tap payment method is turned on. Your store may have renamed it. See Choose payment methods.
- At least one reader is turned on for your station. See Set up card readers for a station.
- The reader is turned on, charged, and connected to the internet.
- The cart has at least one item. See Find and add products.
Take the payment
Section titled “Take the payment”-
In the cart, tap Checkout.
-
If a tip screen or a Points & Rewards screen opens, complete it first. See Accept a tip and Redeem Points and Rewards.
-
Under Select Payment Method, tap Swipe/Insert/Tap. If your store also takes NMI payments, two methods may have this name. Tap the one marked with Stripe Terminal.
-
Select the reader the customer will use. If the list shows Preparing readers…, wait for the readers to load.
-
Tap the pay button. By default it shows Pay and the amount.
The Payment Processing window opens and shows the reader’s status, such as Waiting for input. Please proceed on the connected terminal.
-
Ask the customer to tap, insert, or swipe their card on the reader.
-
Follow any prompts on the reader screen.
When the payment goes through, the register shows the completed order. Tap New Order to start the next sale.
The reader does not ask the customer for a tip. To take tips, use the register’s tip screen. See Accept a tip.
If the reader starts on its own
Section titled “If the reader starts on its own”Your station may use Express checkout. With Express checkout, the register starts your default reader as soon as you choose Swipe/Insert/Tap, or as soon as the checkout screen opens. You do not pick a reader or tap the pay button. The Payment Processing window opens, and you continue from step 6.
If the default reader is not ready, you see the reader list and take the payment as usual. To set this up, see Set up Express checkout.
Stop a payment
Section titled “Stop a payment”To cancel before the customer pays, tap Abort in the Payment Processing window.
- If the customer has not presented a card yet, the register stops waiting and asks Stripe to cancel the payment. A Processing error window shows Payment aborted manually. Close it. This message does not by itself prove the payment was cancelled. Before you tap the pay button again or use another payment method, follow If you are not sure the payment went through to confirm that no payment completed and none is still processing. To go back to the cart instead, tap Cancel checkout.
- If the reader is already processing the card, you see The payment is already processing and can no longer be aborted. Wait for the result. Wait for the result. If you need to reverse the payment after it completes, refund the order. See Refund an order in the register.
- If you see The aborted card payment may still be processing. Check the payment status before retrying., the payment could not be cancelled in time and may still go through. Follow If you are not sure the payment went through before you do anything else.
If you are not sure the payment went through
Section titled “If you are not sure the payment went through”These messages mean the result is unknown:
- Payment processing timeout. Please check your order history. This can appear while the customer is still paying. The payment can still go through after you see it.
- The payment may have completed, but the order could not be updated. Check the order history and the payment status before charging again.
- The card payment outcome could not be confirmed. Check the Stripe dashboard before taking another payment for this order. The order is put on hold.
- A window titled Verify Previous Payment Attempt.
To check the payment:
- Look at the reader screen. Wait until it shows a result or returns to idle.
- Find the order in the register’s order history. See Find and view orders.
- Check your Stripe Dashboard for a payment on this order. Look for payments that completed and payments that are still processing.
- If the customer was charged, or a payment is still processing, do not charge again.
- Only if no payment completed and none is still processing, take the payment again.
If you are not sure, contact Jovvie support before you take another payment. For the fix for each message, see the Stripe section of Card reader payment problems.
If the amount charged does not match the order
Section titled “If the amount charged does not match the order”If the reader charged a different amount than the order total, the register shows a message starting with Terminal captured. The order is not completed and is put on hold. See Resolve a card payment that did not match the order.
