Set up Stripe card readers for a Jovvie Point of Sale station

This page helps you add Stripe card readers and choose which ones staff can use at each Point of Sale station. Each station has its own list of readers, and staff can only use the web readers you turn on for their station.

This page covers Stripe readers that connect over the internet, called web terminals. Readers you use through the Jovvie app on a phone or tablet are set up in the app instead.

  • Connect your Stripe account in POS > Settings > Stripe Connect. The Stripe tab on a station only appears after Stripe is connected.
  • Have your card reader turned on and connected to the internet.
  • Get the reader’s registration code. This is a short code the reader shows on its screen. See your reader’s instructions for how to display it.
  • You need to be an administrator or shop manager.
  1. In your dashboard, go to POS > Stations.
  2. Find the station and click Edit Station.
  3. Open the Stripe tab.
  4. Under Stripe Account, select the Stripe account this station uses.
  5. Under Location ID, select the location for this station. A location is the place in Stripe that your readers belong to. Locations that Jovvie created for this station are marked [Live] or [Test].
  6. Click Save.

Select a specific location under Location ID before you register a reader. The reader is added to that location.

  1. On the same Stripe tab, go to Register new reader.
  2. In Registration Code, enter the code shown on the reader.
  3. In Label (optional), enter a name staff will recognize, such as “Front counter”.
  4. Click Save.

The reader is registered to the selected location and turned on for this station. It now appears under Registered Readers.

If you see Save Stripe Account / Location ID before registering new reader., finish the steps in Choose the Stripe account and location first.

Registered Readers lists every reader at the selected location, with its Device Type, Serial Number, and Status.

To see readers from every location in your Stripe account, select Show readers of all locations under Location ID. Use this option to view and turn on readers. To register a new reader, select a specific location instead.

  1. Use the Enabled switch next to each reader. Turn it on for readers staff should use at this station. Turn it off for readers they should not use.
  2. Click Save.

To find a reader in a long list, type part of its label, serial number, or ID in the search box.

Optional: choose a default reader for Express checkout

Section titled “Optional: choose a default reader for Express checkout”

With Express checkout, the Point of Sale starts a default reader automatically, so staff do not need to pick one.

The default reader is used when Swipe/Insert/Tap has Terminal Types set to Web terminal and one of these is set up:

  • Express checkout is On for Swipe/Insert/Tap. The reader starts as soon as staff choose that payment method. To find this setting, click Setting next to Swipe/Insert/Tap in POS > Settings > Gateway.
  • Express Checkout button is set to Swipe/Insert/Tap in POS > Settings > Gateway. The Checkout button goes straight to the reader.

If this station uses its own payment method settings (Gateway Source set to Use Station-Level), use the station’s Gateway tab instead.

To choose the default reader:

  1. On the station’s Stripe tab, go to Default reader (Web terminal Express checkout).
  2. Select a reader. Only readers that are turned on for this station appear in the list.
  3. Click Save.

To have staff pick a reader every time instead, select None (show selection).

Express checkout does not start a reader automatically for split payments. If the default reader is not available, staff see the reader list and pick a reader as usual.

At checkout, staff choose Swipe/Insert/Tap (or the name you gave this payment method) and then pick one of the readers you turned on. If no readers are turned on, they see You do not have any readers enabled for this station.
